DIY Teeth Whitening Baking Soda Remedy

Ingredients

  • Baking Soda
  • Water

Directions

1.) Mix 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda with water until you get a paste-like consistency. Ideally only a few drops of either should be enough to achieve the desired form.

2.) Apply the mixture to your teeth using a toothbrush, or your finger, and brush your teeth for 1-2 minutes then rinse your mouth out.

3.) Repeat this process every other day for up to 2 weeks.

Optional: You can also use this base remedy in conjunction with some of the remedies we highlight below.

Only use it for up to 2 weeks

This remedy also has a point where excessive use can be harmful, as Jessica from Hawaii Family Dental points out “it should be noted that excessive use of baking soda could be harmful to the enamel due to its abrasiveness. Also, baking soda is not a replacement for toothpaste as it does not contain cavity-fighting fluoride”.

Now that doesn’t mean you should never use a DIY teeth whitening baking soda remedy. Simply make sure not to replace standard toothpastes with it. Don’t risk your teeth for the long-term just to momentarily blind people with white teeth!

More Teeth Remedies

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is used by many to help whiten teeth. However, as is the case with most teeth whitening remedies, there tends to be a catch. Apple cider vinegar is very acidic and using too much can harm tooth enamel in the long run. You can safely use apple cider vinegar as a teeth whitening agent so long as you remember to dilute the vinegar and only use it occasionally. For example, you can create a mouthwash by using one part apple cider vinegar and three parts water, and then just swish the mouth wash around your mouth for about a minute or so. (Watertower Dental Care).

Coconut Oil

Just like you put the lime in coconut and shake it all about, you can put the coconut oil in the mouth and whiten all about. Sorry that was a bad joke, but still coconut oil is a common method to whitening teeth. Most people simply use up to a tablespoon of coconut oil let it liquefy in by keeping it in their mouth and then swish it around their mouth for 10-15 minutes. (SkincareOrg). Just like with the vinegar don’t abuse this option either.

Sea Salt

Yeah sea salt, sounds like a delicious tasting option doesn’t it? Sea salt is actually a great option when it comes to helping to whiten your teeth. With this option you can simply sprinkle some on-top of your toothpaste or apply the salt directly to your teeth. If either of those prospects are unappealing to you there is always the classic warm water and salt option too. You could easily add salt to the DIY teeth whitening baking soda remedy covered above.

Lemon Juice

You can also use lemon juice to whiten your teeth. Simply mix one teaspoon of lemon juice and one teaspoon of water. You can apply it directly with your finger, brush your teeth with it, or even use it as a mouthwash. If you’re brushing with it don’t brush longer than 1 minute. If using as a mouthwash or letting it sit don’t go beyond 5-10 minutes of use. Be sure to flush your mouth out with clean water after each session and only use this remedy twice a week. How amazing is it that you won’t need to drop a ton of money to get whiter teeth? Nor adopt morning and evening teeth whitening routines that last months on end? As with most remedies always play it safe and do not abuse the remedy. Also consult a dentist beforehand to make sure this works for you. Most will just let you ask over the phone actually.
